The Role of PoE in future security applications

Standards and incorporating compliant solutions into the next generation of LAN able security equipment, interoperability through standards will become a reality. The electronic security system of the near future will still need to be provisioned and adjusted, but its ability to be deployed on the enterprise LAN will be a given. The savings to the end user, increased security and reduced provisioning will drive this transformation.

As these new devices become available, the traditional security “panel” may, in many instances disappear, to be replaced by software applications that reside on a PoE enabled, UPS and generator backed up server. With the additional power soon to be made available with PoE+, one can envision the future security system as a completely integrated solution that resides as an application on a server and incorporates seamless functionality between PTZ digital video cameras, access control components and intrusion detection sensors.

Those who accept this new paradigm will be positioning themselves for success, those that do not will likely see their markets gradually dissipate.
